”It seems to me that our three basic needs, for food and security and love, are so mixed and mingled and entwined that we cannot straightly think of one without the others. So it happens that when I write of hunger, I am really writing about love and the hunger for it, and warmth and the love of it … and it is all one.”

–M.F.K. Fisher, The Gastronomical Me

I’m stuck in Fairbanks, Alaska.  And I mean stuck.  Plane tickets out of this place are expensive, which wouldn’t be a tragic situation except that I really love to travel.  More importantly I love to eat when I travel.  But when I can’t travel, I cook and read about food. I’m amassing a library of food fiction, essays, anthologies, and journalism and discovering that there are as many ways to approach the topic of food as there are ways to skin a cat. This blog has grown to be a way for me to keep track of what I’m reading and the contexts into which we fit our experiences with the edible world.

I write about other things and I paint and I have a day job, but The Tart Little Piggy is where I play with food. You can contact me by email at emason@alaska.edu or just Google me… the results are probably safe for work.

I’m living in Wasilla, originally from Anchorage and can’t wait to cook some of this food!

Ps. I lived in Jedula, Spain for about a year talk about FABULOUS FOOD!

Roark, no kidding, the food in Spain is something I will never forget. I know we have our own culinary traditions in Alaska, but they really don’t compare to paella or gazpacho or any of the mindblowing meals I had in Spain.

Hope you’re staying warm. It’s -30 here… I should visit Anchorage for some warm weather and sunshine.

  2. Great blog, and I bleed a Floridian orange sunset for a fellow Southener trapped where you are! Perhaps we shall come visit during the summer, I have always wanted to visit 9just visit) Alaska. Till then stay warm and thanks for stoping by the blog.

    Doc

I like your artwork. I didn’t notice it before…probably because one has to scroll down further.

Thanks, Jean. I’ve been playing around with the placement of my sidebar items, so it moves from time to time. Painting, cooking, writing… my creative life is obviously very full!
